The City of Alexandria announced on May 22 that residential refuse, recycling, yard waste, and curbside compost will not be collected on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. All these services will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

This change affects all scheduled pickups: Monday collections will occur on Tuesday, May 26; Tuesday collections move to Wednesday, May 27; Wednesday’s to Thursday, May 28; and Thursday’s to Friday, May 29. The Household Hazardous Waste Electronic Collection Drop-off Center will also be closed on Monday.

These adjustments are part of Alexandria’s ongoing service provision to residents within its defined boundaries as an independent city, according to the official website. The city operates under a council-manager government structure in which the City Council selects a manager responsible for operations. Alexandria incorporates racial and social equity into its policies and decisions to foster fair community outcomes. Additionally, it maintains museums and historic sites that enhance community identity by interpreting local social and cultural history—including documentation of African American heritage—and partners with agencies for archaeological research and preservation.
