The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities announced on March 9 a full schedule of spring and summer events for residents, families, and visitors. The lineup includes activities such as glow parties, jazz festivals, family picnics, fireworks on the Potomac River, and special programs for children and adults.

These events are designed to bring the community together while offering opportunities to learn about local history and culture. Alexandria’s museums and historic sites play a role in enhancing community identity by interpreting local social and cultural history, according to the official website.

Highlights from the upcoming season include the Adopt A Park kickoff on March 18, World Water Day at Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center on March 21, RecFest at Patrick Henry Recreation Center on May 2, the Asian American Pacific Islander Month Celebration on May 30, and the 48th Annual ALX Jazz Fest from June 12-14 at Waterfront Park. The city will also host its annual birthday celebration with live music and fireworks at Oronoco Bay Park on July 12.

Special programming is available for children and teens with activities like Nerf battles, dodgeball nights, cheer competitions, spa days for Mother’s Day, Parents Night Out sessions, kiddie cabarets, and more. Adults can participate in line dance socials or enjoy live music during concert series at William Ramsay Recreation Center.

Alexandria maintains several sites documenting African American heritage including the Alexandria Black History Museum as noted on the official website. The city incorporates racial and social equity into its policies to foster fair outcomes for all members of the community per information from its official site. It operates under a council-manager government structure where City Council selects a manager to oversee operations according to city documentation.

As an independent city providing services within defined boundaries to residents, businesses, and visitors alike according to its official website, Alexandria also supports archaeological research through partnerships between its Archaeological Commission and other agencies.
