The City of Alexandria is inviting residents to participate in a stream cleanup event scheduled for Saturday, October 11. The event will take place at the Historic Holmes Run Channel, located behind the Charles Beatley Library at 5005 Duke Street, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Staff from the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services Stormwater Management Division will lead the cleanup effort. Participants are asked to meet in the library parking lot at 9:00 a.m. for sign-in and an event briefing before proceeding to the cleanup site.
According to city officials, “The cleanup is held annually in recognition of the International Coastal Cleanup. Established more than 35 years ago by the Ocean Conservancy, the event is organized to bring communities together to help clean and protect local coastlines and waterways. The City has participated for more than 15 years.”
These stream cleanups are part of ongoing efforts by the Stormwater Management Division to comply with Department of Environmental Quality requirements aimed at reducing pollution in local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.
The City will supply gloves, bags, and first-aid kits for volunteers. Attendees are encouraged to wear long pants and covered footwear, as well as bring their own water.
For registration or further information about the event, individuals can contact Anthony Minnick at Anthony.minnick@alexandriava.gov. The public is also encouraged to help protect local water resources through daily actions such as picking up after pets, limiting fertilizer use, and reporting concerns using the Alex311 system or by visiting alexandriava.gov/go/3120.
