The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services announced on May 22 that street repaving work will begin Tuesday, May 26, following the Memorial Day holiday. The department is responsible for maintaining sidewalks, alleys, and over 561 lane miles of road across the city.

This update matters to residents and businesses because regular maintenance helps ensure safe travel for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and all users. The city said that those whose streets are scheduled for repaving will receive advance notice through project signs or letters. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted before work begins, and vehicles in violation may be ticketed or towed.

The city cautioned that the street repaving list and schedule are subject to change based on weather conditions, equipment availability, other ongoing projects, or utility coordination. For this week only, due to the holiday observance on Monday, work will start a day later than usual.

Scheduled locations include East Abingdon Drive (from Washington Street to end), West Abingdon Drive (from Washington Street to end), and Madison Street (from North Columbus Street to Washington Street). Additional information is available at alexandriava.gov/go/2356. Questions about paving operations can be directed to Asi Mbah at 703.746.4042 or through Alex311 online.

As an independent city with a council-manager government structure where the City Council selects a manager for daily operations according to the official website, Alexandria provides services within its defined boundaries for residents, businesses and visitors. The city’s commitment extends beyond infrastructure: it incorporates racial and social equity into policies and decisions; maintains museums such as the Alexandria Black History Museum; enhances community identity by interpreting local history; and partners with agencies through commissions like the Alexandria Archaeological Commission—all according to information from the official website.
