The deadline for voter registration or updating existing registration for the upcoming Special Election in Alexandria is February 3, 2026. The election, scheduled for February 10, will include contests for State Senate District 39—which covers the entire City of Alexandria—and House of Delegates District 5, which includes only a portion of the city.

Residents who have moved since their last vote are encouraged to verify their registration status at vote.elections.virginia.gov, by emailing voters@alexandriava.gov, or by calling 703.746.4050.

Eligible U.S. citizens living in Virginia who will be at least 18 years old by November 3, 2026, can register online at vote.elections.virginia.gov until midnight on February 3. In-person registration is available at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N. Royal St., Suite 100) until 5 p.m. that day. Alternatively, applications can be downloaded from alexandriava.gov/Elections and mailed to the office; they must be postmarked no later than February 3.

Voter information letters will be sent within one week to new or transferred registrants.

After the regular registration deadline passes, same day registration begins and must be completed in person either during early voting or on Election Day at the assigned polling location for an individual’s current address. Those registering on Election Day will cast a provisional ballot.

Applications to request a mail-in ballot must reach the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 5 p.m. on January 30, 2026. Applications can be submitted online via vote.elections.virginia.gov or downloaded from the City’s Elections webpage and returned by mail or email. Residents may also call the office to request a mailed application and are advised to consider postal delivery times when doing so.

Completed mail-in ballots must arrive at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on February 10 or be postmarked by that date and received no later than noon on February 13.

Early in-person voting runs from January 31 through February 7 at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N Royal Street, Suite 100). Voting hours vary each day; details are available at alexandriava.gov/Elections along with sample ballots and other information about voting locations and requirements.

Ballot drop boxes will be present at all polling places from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, with an additional secure outdoor drop box under video surveillance available around-the-clock outside the Office of Voter Registration and Elections until polls close on February 10.

For further details about deadlines, sample ballots, precinct maps, ID requirements, or accommodations for disabilities, residents can visit alexandriava.gov/Elections or contact voters@alexandriava.gov or call (703)746-4050 (Virginia Relay:711).
