The City of Alexandria has declared a local emergency in response to the snowstorm expected to impact the area beginning January 24, 2026. The declaration, signed by City Manager and Director of Emergency Management James F. Parajon and City Clerk Gloria Sitton, states that the city may face emergency conditions severe enough to threaten life and property.

“THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DECLARED, that a local emergency exists throughout the City of Alexandria; and

IT IS FURTHER DECLARED AND ORDERED, that during the existence of said emergency, the powers, functions and duties of the Director of emergency Management shall be those prescribed by state law and the ordinances, resolutions and operations plans of the City of Alexandria, and that any actions taken under this declaration shall be directed at the prevention or mitigation of damage, loss, hardship or suffering threatened by, or resulting from, the emergency.”

The local emergency is effective from January 24 at 6:00 p.m. through January 27 at 11:59 p.m., unless extended or ended earlier by written notice.

City officials expect heavy snow, sleet, icy conditions and extremely cold temperatures as part of this storm system. Hazardous travel is anticipated starting late Saturday night through early Monday morning. Residents are advised to prepare for difficult road conditions.

A Snow Emergency has also been declared in advance of the storm. All vehicles must be removed from designated snow emergency routes by 10 p.m. on Saturday so crews can clear roads safely. Vehicles left on these routes may be ticketed or towed.

Very cold temperatures with low wind chills are forecasted for Alexandria during this period. The city encourages residents to limit time outdoors, dress warmly in layers and check on neighbors who might need help.

City crews are preparing equipment and will work continuously throughout the storm to respond to impacts and maintain public safety. Residents can monitor current road conditions by calling 511.

Further updates will be provided as weather conditions change. Residents are encouraged to follow official city communication channels for information about warming centers and snow removal efforts via alexandriava.gov/alert as well as resources like alexandriava.gov/Snow.

Additional weather updates can also be found through local media outlets and on the National Weather Service winter weather website.
