As temperatures begin to drop, the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is urging residents to take steps to protect themselves from seasonal illnesses such as colds, flu, RSV, and COVID-19. These illnesses can result in significant health complications, lost days at work or school, and in some cases, hospitalization.
AHD recommends community members stay healthy this fall by receiving vaccinations and following preventive health measures.
Vaccines are available in Alexandria to help prevent these illnesses. The flu vaccine is approved and recommended for everyone aged six months and older. The RSV vaccine is a one-time shot recommended for certain groups, including older adults and pregnant individuals; those eligible are encouraged to check their insurance coverage. The COVID-19 vaccine is also approved for everyone six months and older. Residents interested in the COVID-19 vaccine are advised to consult with a pharmacist or healthcare provider about recommendations and availability.
For more information on vaccines, residents can visit www.alexandriava.gov/Vaccines or contact their doctor, pharmacist, or AHD’s Call Center at 703.746.4988, where interpreters are available.
AHD also emphasizes the importance of everyday preventive habits to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses. These include washing hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers when necessary, covering coughs and sneezes with an inner elbow instead of hands, wearing masks for additional protection if desired, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and handrails, and staying home when feeling sick—waiting at least 24 hours after a fever subsides before returning to regular activities.
