The City of Alexandria will participate in Virginia Archaeology Month this October with a series of events and programs aimed at highlighting local archaeological sites and preservation efforts. The initiative is part of a statewide celebration organized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Events begin on Friday, September 26, with Tavern Game Night at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, where attendees can play tavern games, listen to a brief presentation about the Alexandria Canal, and take part in pub trivia. Tickets for the event are available online for $10.

Throughout October, archaeologists from the city will be present at several farmer’s markets to discuss recent projects. These include appearances at North Old Town Farmer’s Market on Sunday, October 5; Old Town Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 11; and West End Farmer’s Market on Sunday, October 12. Topics range from stewardship of buried history to preserving historic ships.

On Saturday, October 25, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum will host “Slip into the Past” during Art Safari at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Participants can try out pottery slip designs inspired by 19th-century techniques and apply temporary tattoos modeled after transfer printed ceramics.

The month concludes with the Ben Brenman Awards on Tuesday, October 28 during an Alexandria City Council meeting. The Alexandria Archaeological Commission will recognize individuals who have contributed to enhancing the city’s archaeological resources.

The Alexandria Archaeology Museum is located on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town. According to museum representatives: “The Alexandria Archaeology Museum is dedicated to preserving and studying Alexandria’s rich archaeological heritage and fostering within residents and visitors a connection between the past and present while inspiring a sense of stewardship and adventure.”
