The City of Alexandria is marking National Recovery Month in September by inviting residents to attend an event supporting individuals overcoming addiction and mental health challenges. The Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) will host the gathering on Wednesday, September 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ben Brenman Park, located at 4800 Brenman Park Drive. The event will include free food trucks, health and wellness resources, music, family activities, and giveaways.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that more than 40 million people aged 12 and older had a substance use condition. These conditions range from dependencies on alcohol and opioids to stimulants, cannabis, and other drugs.
Nationally, drug overdose deaths have declined by nearly 27% since last year, with an estimated 80,391 deaths reported. In Virginia alone, there were 2,463 overdose fatalities; opioids were involved in about 85% of those cases. Officials say these decreases highlight the effectiveness of treatment and prevention but emphasize that ongoing efforts are needed to ensure access to recovery resources.
“Substance use conditions are often misunderstood and overlooked, but at the heart are people in need of health care and a sense of belonging through social support,” according to city officials.
DCHS offers around-the-clock access to treatment options via phone at 703.746.3636 (Virginia Relay 711). For assistance specifically with opioid use cessation, residents can contact the Medication Assisted Opioid Treatment Program at 703.746.3610. Residents are also encouraged to obtain Naloxone (Narcan) as a first aid measure for opioid overdoses and to use permanent drug drop boxes for disposing of unused medications.
“By commemorating National Recovery Month, the City affirms that treatment works, recovery is achievable, and the community makes it possible,” city representatives said.
