Alexandria inmate dies in hospital after receiving medical treatment

An inmate in the custody of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office died early this morning at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The individual, Ricardo Roberts, was a 60-year-old resident of Alexandria who had been held without bond since December 24 on multiple counts of violating a protective order.

Roberts had received medical care at Inova Alexandria Hospital starting December 31 before being transferred to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died at 5:09 a.m. while being treated for chronic medical issues.

As required by law, police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct investigations into the in-custody death. The Sheriff’s Office stated that all required notifications have been made and an internal review will be conducted to ensure policies and procedures were followed. “Because this is an in-custody death, police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct investigations as required by law. The Sheriff’s Office has made all required notifications and, consistent with our policy, will conduct an internal review to ensure our policies and procedures were followed.”
