The City of Alexandria is starting its Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) budget process and is inviting residents to take part in several events this week.
On Tuesday, February 24, City Manager James Parajon will present the FY27 Proposed Budget to the City Council at 7 p.m. The presentation will take place during the Legislative Meeting at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, located at 4850 Mark Center Dr. The meeting is open to the public and can also be viewed online at alexandriava.gov/Dockets.
A work session focused on the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and revenues will be held by City Council on Wednesday, February 25. These sessions allow council members to review and discuss details of the proposed budget. While public comments are not accepted during work sessions, residents may listen in person or online and submit feedback through other channels.
On Thursday, February 26, there will be a community presentation about the FY27 Proposed Budget from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center at 901 Wythe St. This event offers an overview of the budget proposal and gives residents a chance to learn more about city priorities and investments. The presentation will also be streamed online.
Each year, Alexandria prepares an annual budget that determines how resources are allocated for education, public safety, housing, transportation, and other essential programs serving its community. Residents can contribute by attending hearings, listening to work sessions, submitting comments online or participating in engagement activities.
“Community input helps City leaders make informed decisions about Alexandria’s priorities and investments for the year ahead,” according to city officials.
Alexandria operates under a council-manager form of government where elected council members select a manager responsible for daily operations (https://www.alexandriava.gov). As an independent city within defined boundaries, Alexandria provides services for residents, businesses and visitors (https://www.alexandriava.gov). Racial and social equity considerations are incorporated into policies and decision-making processes to promote fair outcomes across communities (https://www.alexandriava.gov).
In addition to core services funded through its annual budget process, Alexandria supports cultural identity through museums interpreting local history (https://www.alexandriava.gov), maintains sites like the Alexandria Black History Museum documenting African American heritage (https://www.alexandriava.gov), and partners with agencies for archaeological research and preservation efforts (https://www.alexandriava.gov).
Residents interested in shaping future city investments are encouraged to participate throughout this year’s FY27 budget cycle.
