The Alexandria Mentoring Partnership (AMP) is marking its 20th anniversary this January, coinciding with Alexandria Mentoring Month and National Mentoring Month. Established in 2006, AMP brings together various local mentoring programs to ensure that young people in Alexandria have access to quality volunteer mentors and programming.
To commemorate the milestone, AMP is organizing several events throughout January. On January 13, AMP staff will attend a City Council meeting where the month will be officially proclaimed as Alexandria Mentoring Month. Mentees, mentors, and staff from partner programs are encouraged to participate in the event.
Community members interested in becoming mentors can join one of AMP’s upcoming “Mentoring 101” information sessions scheduled for January 15, 24, and 28. These sessions will provide details about what mentoring involves, current needs in Alexandria, available partner programs, and how volunteers can make a difference by dedicating a few hours each month.
Throughout January, AMP will also have feature tables at Ellen Coolidge Burke Branch Library, James M. Duncan Branch Library, and Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library. These displays will offer information on mentoring opportunities as well as books related to mentoring.
Those wishing to see examples of local mentoring or hear directly from mentors can visit the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities’ Instagram or Facebook pages for posts highlighting these efforts during the month.
For more information about mentoring or to express interest in volunteering as a mentor, residents are directed to visit the AMP website.
