The City of Alexandria, in partnership with EcoAction Arlington, is offering residents a chance to receive a free programmable Wi-Fi thermostat or a home energy efficiency kit by submitting an application through the Eco-City Homes program. The initiative aims to help participants lower their energy bills and improve home comfort while supporting Alexandria’s sustainability goals.

To participate, applicants need to complete an online form available for renters, condo owners, and homeowners. The application provides a checklist of steps to make homes healthier and more efficient. Upon completion, participants can choose between two incentives: a programmable thermostat that allows users to set schedules and adjust settings remotely—potentially saving up to 10% annually on heating and cooling—or a home energy kit containing items such as LED bulbs, smart plugs, water-saving showerheads, faucet aerators, weatherstripping, and other simple upgrades.

The offer is open to all residents but is only available while supplies last.

Alexandria has set a goal of achieving 53,000 energy-efficient homes as part of its citywide climate targets. By joining the Eco-City Homes program, residents contribute toward this goal. Participants also receive an Eco-City Homes yard sign and window cling.

According to the City of Alexandria’s official website, the city incorporates racial and social equity into its policies and decisions to foster fair community outcomes (https://www.alexandriava.gov). Alexandria operates under a council-manager government structure where the City Council selects a manager for daily operations (https://www.alexandriava.gov). As an independent city, it provides services within its defined boundaries for residents, businesses, and visitors (https://www.alexandriava.gov).

For questions or assistance with the application process, residents can visit the Eco-City Homes website or contact Samantha Heitsch at Samantha.Heitsch@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.3776. Reasonable disability accommodations are available by contacting Samantha Heitsch or using Virginia Relay 711. Free interpretation and translation services are also offered by emailing LanguageAccess@alexandriava.gov or calling 703.746.3960.

EcoAction Arlington works to create a sustainable community through education, advocacy, environmental justice efforts, and addressing climate challenges.

Eco-City Alexandria represents a collaborative strategy for citywide sustainability that engages community members in transparent decision-making processes while aligning natural resources with local policies and economic realities.
