Historic Alexandria has announced a series of programs and events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. The city, known for its historic connection to the nation’s founding and as George Washington’s adopted hometown, will offer residents and visitors opportunities to learn about local contributions to American history.

The America250 commemoration will begin with a public event on January 26, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum. Organizers state that the evening will include guest speakers reflecting on Virginia’s role in American history and previewing upcoming exhibitions and activities planned for the anniversary year.

Throughout 2026, Alexandria will host various events including “Sails on the Potomac” from June 12–14, a new exhibition opening in June, monthly Historic Happy Hours, and participation in the Virginia 250 Passport program at several museums. Other planned activities feature specialty tours, lectures, musical performances, and exhibitions highlighting Alexandria’s part in the American Revolution.

Alexandria is an independent city established in 1749 along the Potomac River in Northern Virginia. It operates its own municipal government and provides public services within its boundaries. The city maintains numerous historic sites and museums—including those documenting African American heritage—and incorporates equity into its policies and programming. More information about these initiatives can be found on the official website.

The Office of Historic Alexandria manages eight museums and historic sites throughout the city. According to their mission statement: “Through powerful storytelling and confronting the City’s past, Historic Alexandria enriches the present and inspires the future. We enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors and serve as a partner in the City’s equity and inclusion initiatives.”
