Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire provided an update on the investigation into an incident that took place on October 14, when masked individuals approached a home on South Iris Street. The event was captured by a doorbell camera and initially reported as an attempted burglary, attracting national attention.
Police officers responded within two minutes of receiving the 9-1-1 call, which began as a report of suspicious activity before being upgraded to a burglary in progress. The Alexandria Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau devoted over 100 hours to identifying those involved.
Detectives discovered during interviews that the victim contacted her brother before calling police. A major development occurred after the department held its first press conference, when community tips helped investigators identify the suspects: three juveniles aged 14 to 16 who are related to the victim. An adult woman admitted responsibility for approaching the home with her two sons and nephew while wearing Halloween masks. Two other adults were present in the street filming what happened.
After consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney and discussing with the family, it was decided not to pursue criminal charges against those involved. As a result, their identities will not be released publicly.
“While this case may not result in prosecution, it represents a serious moral failure,” said Chief McGuire. “Pranks of this nature are not taken lightly. Actions like these could have had deadly consequences. Adults must be accountable for their children, and parents have a moral responsibility to guide and correct their behavior.”
With Halloween approaching, Chief McGuire noted that Alexandria Police officers will increase patrols in neighborhoods to help ensure safety during holiday celebrations. He encouraged parents to discuss safety and respectful behavior with their children and teens.
The department offered several safety reminders: talk to children about appropriate Halloween conduct; encourage group travel in well-lit areas; remind everyone not to approach or prank private homes without invitation; and report suspicious activity immediately by calling 9-1-1.
The Alexandria Police Department thanked residents for working together with law enforcement to keep neighborhoods safe.
