The City of Alexandria has released the latest draft of its 2025 Green Building Policy. This follows a public comment period that began in April, during which city staff considered feedback from residents, developers, and letters submitted by both the Planning Commission and Environmental Policy Commission. The review process prompted further analysis on Energy Use Intensity (EUI) targets and renewable energy requirements.
The update to the policy is structured around three main objectives: “focusing on the most important and impactful solutions,” “creating more regulatory certainty,” and “reducing unnecessary costs associated with a certification requirement.”
City staff plan to present the updated policy to the Planning Commission and Environmental Policy Commission before it goes before the City Council at a legislative meeting.
Information about the proposed update, as well as details on presentations and meetings, can be found at AlexandriaVA.gov/GreenBuilding.
