City of Alexandria crews are responding to a significant winter storm that has brought heavy snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain to the region. The combination of these weather events has led to thick ice accumulation on roadways, requiring specialized equipment for removal and multiple rounds of plowing.

According to city officials, primary roads in Alexandria are currently fully passable. However, due to ongoing below-freezing temperatures, crews continue efforts to plow and treat roads for refreezing while also working on residential streets. Additional contracted equipment is being used to assist with snow removal operations. City representatives caution that progress will take time because some routes must be re-plowed as conditions change.

The City Council meeting scheduled for tonight will proceed virtually. Residents can view the session live at alexandriava.gov/Dockets or register via Zoom.

In response to the storm’s impact, the city’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road is operating around the clock until Tuesday, February 3 at noon. Trash, recycling, and yard waste collection originally set for Tuesday, January 27 have been postponed by two days this week due to hazardous road conditions.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing operations through alexandriava.gov/Alert. Non-emergency concerns can be reported via 311 or by calling 703.746.4444 for issues such as downed trees on public property.

For power outages or trees affecting power lines, residents should contact Dominion Energy at 866.DOM.HELP (866.366.4357) or visit dominionenergy.com. Water main breaks can be reported to Virginia American Water at 800.452.6863.
