The City of Alexandria has announced that enforcement of its sidewalk snow removal ordinance will resume on Tuesday, February 3. This follows a pause in enforcement to give residents more time to recover from the recent winter storm.
According to the city, most city-owned sidewalks have been cleared, with efforts focused on ensuring safe access to bus stops, schools, and residential streets. The city is now asking residents for help in clearing private sidewalks.
Residents are asked to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their properties as soon as possible. Those who can are also encouraged to move vehicles parked on residential streets that have not yet been fully plowed so that city crews can continue their work. Additionally, the city urges neighbors to assist those who may be unable to clear snow and ice themselves.
“Sidewalks, driveways, and entrances are the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, occupant, community association, or business. Because this was a Level 3 Snow Emergency, snow and ice must be cleared from all paved sidewalks abutting your property within 72 hours of the end of the snowfall. This time was extended due to the severe nature of the weather event,” according to information provided by the City of Alexandria.
Penalties for failing to comply with these requirements are outlined in City Code §5-2-21. More details about snow removal responsibilities and penalties can be found at alexandriava.gov/Snow.
