Alexandria’s recreation department announces holiday events for all ages

The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) in Alexandria has announced a series of holiday events for the community. The calendar includes activities for all ages, such as tree lightings, concerts, family festivals, and teen nights.

One of the main events is the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, November 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Market Square. This annual event features music, carols, and a visit from Santa.

Other activities include Grinchmas at Charles Houston Rec Center on December 6 with festive activities and a live reading of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and the Chinquapin Park Recreation & Aquatics Facility’s 40th Anniversary celebration on the same day. Families can also participate in gingerbread house making and crafts at Leonard Armstrong Rec Center during Family Winter Holiday Fun.

For those interested in music and art, A Very Merry ALX Jazz Fest will take place at the Masonic Memorial on December 12. Children can have breakfast with Santa at Mount Vernon Rec Center on December 13.

Seniors are invited to attend an Ugly Sweater Party at Patrick Henry Rec Center on December 19. The RPCA is also hosting its second annual Alexandria Fall Chess Tournament for students in grades K-12 on November 22 at Oswald Durant Center.

Youth cheerleading teams will compete in the Alexandria Holiday Invitational Cheer Competition at Alexandria City High School on December 14. Teenagers can join the Teen Winter Pool Jam at Minnie Howard Aquatics Facility on December 20.

Adults have opportunities to socialize with an Adult Social Night at Leonard Armstrong Rec Center on November 21 and a Line Dance Social at Charles Houston Rec Center on December 9.
