The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office announced on April 5 the arrest and termination of Deputy Sheriff Amarachukwu W. Igwe after an alleged attempt to smuggle narcotics into the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Igwe was apprehended on April 4 following an internal investigation that uncovered her intent to deliver drugs to an incarcerated individual. Officials said that no narcotics reached inmates or the general population before Igwe was taken into custody by the Investigations, Professionalism & Oversight Section.

Igwe, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in July 2025, was transported to Arlington County Detention Facility for processing. A magistrate issued warrants charging her with delivery of drugs to prisoners, conspiracy to deliver drugs, and possession of a Schedule III controlled substance under Virginia law.

Sheriff Sean Casey said he acted immediately in terminating Igwe’s employment with the department. “I commend the diligent work of our Investigations, Professionalism & Oversight Section whose proactive efforts uncovered this criminal conduct before it could jeopardize the safety of our staff or the residents of the Detention Center,” Casey said. “I have zero tolerance for actions that undermine the security of our facility and those who violate the public trust placed in them will face the full consequences of their actions.”

The case remains under active investigation by authorities.
