In January 2026, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (ASO) played a significant role in responding to the aftermath of a recent snow and ice storm. Sheriff Sean Casey and several deputies delivered Meals on Wheels to residents over two consecutive days, ensuring that homebound individuals received food. Sheriff Casey also assisted by plowing streets and clearing access for Casa Chirilagua, an organization serving many local residents. Deputies further helped shovel out residents unable to clear snow themselves. The ASO encouraged community members to volunteer as Snow Buddies.

Sheriff Casey announced the promotion of Andrea Hancock to Inmate Classification Manager. Hancock has been with the office since 2000 as an Inmate Classification Counselor and previously worked at the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center as both a deputy and counselor. She has also contributed through mentoring, team-building efforts, and service on the Sheriff’s Employee Advisory Committee.

The ASO investigated threats made against two judges this month. After receiving multiple threatening communications, deputies identified a Maryland man as the suspect and obtained seven arrest warrants, including two felony charges for threats of death or bodily injury. The suspect was arrested in Cumberland, Maryland on January 21 and is awaiting extradition to Alexandria.

On Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, observed on January 9, students and staff at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology expressed gratitude toward deputies with cards and gifts. All Alexandria City Public Schools elementary schools have veteran deputies assigned as liaisons who regularly visit schools to interact with students and check security.

Applications are now open for the spring session of the Sheriff’s Community Academy. The program offers Alexandrians insight into how the Sheriff’s Office operates within public safety and criminal justice over four Saturday mornings starting March 7. Applications are due by February 27.

Operation Elf provided holiday gifts during the 2025 season to more than 200 children in Alexandria, including those with incarcerated parents and families referred by partner agencies such as Together We Bake—a program supporting underserved women through workforce training.
