The City of Alexandria’s Resource Recovery Division announced on Apr. 10 that it will host a free shredding event for residents on Saturday, April 18. The event will take place in the parking lot of 3871 Mt. Vernon Ave., at MOM’s Organic Market, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The event is organized in recognition of Earth Month and the end of tax season, providing an opportunity for city residents to securely dispose of sensitive documents such as financial records, legal papers, address books, and medical records. Residents can observe the shredding process through a monitor mounted on the side of the shredding truck. All shredded materials will be recycled after processing.
Materials not accepted at the event include office supplies like staple removers or hole punchers, batteries, electronics, hanging folders, microfiche, three-ring binders, plastic report covers, binder clips and acetate covers.
Interpretation and translation services are available upon request by emailing LanguageAccess@alexandriava.gov or calling 703-746-3960. For disability accommodations related to waste disposal events or other city services, contact wastesmart@alexandriava.gov or Virginia Relay 711.
Alexandria provides services to its residents as an independent city within defined boundaries according to the official website. The city operates under a council-manager government structure where members select a manager responsible for daily operations according to the official website. In addition to waste management efforts like this shredding event, Alexandria incorporates racial and social equity into its policies with goals toward fair community outcomes per the official website.
Broader cultural initiatives also shape Alexandria’s identity; museums and historic sites interpret local social history while documenting African American heritage through institutions such as the Alexandria Black History Museum as noted on the official website. Archaeological research is conducted in partnership with agencies and residents via commissions dedicated to preservation according to the official website.
