Alexandria to host Sails on the Potomac and ALX Jazz Fest June 12-14

The City of Alexandria announced on Apr. 6 that it will host “Sails on the Potomac” and the annual ALX Jazz Fest from June 12 through June 14 at Waterfront Park. The event will feature historic tall ship tours, live music, family activities, art displays, and a free fireworks show on Saturday night.

The festival marks Alexandria’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by highlighting its role in America’s founding era. Residents and visitors can tour ships such as Gazela, Kalmar Nyckel, Providence, and Sultana for free with advance timed tickets available online. Walk-up lines will also be offered but entry is not guaranteed without a ticket.

Music will play a central role during the three-day celebration as ALX Jazz Fest celebrates its 48th year with daily themes: Americana Roots on Friday, American Jazz and Poetry on Saturday, and Future Sounds of America on Sunday. Food vendors will be present at Waterfront Park throughout the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets; leashed pets are welcome except aboard ships where only service animals are permitted.

According to the official website, Alexandria’s museums and historic sites contribute to community identity by interpreting local social and cultural history. The city maintains several sites documenting African American heritage including the Alexandria Black History Museum.The official website also notes that Alexandria incorporates racial and social equity into its policies to promote fair outcomes for all residents.

Alexandria operates under a council-manager government structure where City Council selects a manager for operations,according to city information. As an independent city,it provides services within defined boundaries.
