Arlington Public Schools announced on Apr. 30 that Ms. Octavia Knigge will serve as the next principal of Dorothy Hamm Middle School, following approval by the Arlington School Board. Knigge is set to begin her new role on July 1, after the retirement of current principal Ellen Smith.

The appointment is significant for the school community as it marks a leadership transition at Dorothy Hamm Middle School. The change comes at a time when experienced leadership is valued in guiding students and staff.

Knigge has more than 20 years of experience in public education, including over a decade in school-based administration. She currently works as assistant principal at Kenmore Middle School within Arlington Public Schools. Her background includes efforts to strengthen instructional practices, support data-informed decision-making, and build collaborative teams that contribute to student growth for all students, including English learners and those receiving special education services.

Her experience also covers school operations such as testing coordination, supervising staff members, and supporting various school improvement initiatives. According to Arlington Public Schools, Knigge was named the 2025 APS Assistant Principal of the Year.

Knigge holds a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Regent University and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Virginia State University.

As she prepares to take on this new role, observers expect Knigge’s background and expertise will help guide Dorothy Hamm Middle School through its next chapter.
