Arlington Public Schools (APS) announced that schools will remain closed on Monday, February 2, 2026, due to unsafe conditions caused by ice accumulation. The closure comes after persistent freezing temperatures led to refreezing of previously cleared areas and additional coverage from street plowing, making sidewalks, bus stops, and side streets hazardous.

According to APS, all 12-month staff are expected to report on time Monday. Staff eligible for telework may work remotely with supervisor approval.

APS plans to reopen schools with a two-hour delay on Tuesday, February 3. The school division provided guidance for families and the community in preparation for a safe return. Recommendations include clearing sidewalks and bus stops in neighborhoods, allowing extra travel time, accompanying students to bus stops, sharing rides when possible, and exercising patience as buses may be delayed navigating narrow streets.

“Thank you to Arlington County and to our custodians and Facilities and Operations staff for their hard work in challenging conditions over the past week. Thank you to the community for your understanding as APS and Arlington County work to address these conditions. We look forward to a safe return to school on Tuesday,” APS stated.
