Arlington Public Schools (APS) has launched a new initiative, Readers Rise: Empowering Young Minds Through Reading, aimed at encouraging elementary students to develop a love of reading and improve literacy skills. The program connects trained community volunteers with students in kindergarten through second grade at Barrett, Hoffman-Boston, and Long Branch elementary schools for weekly one-on-one reading sessions.

Volunteers participating in the Readers Rise program are asked to dedicate one hour each week to support student learning and help build their confidence as readers. This pilot is part of APS’s broader strategy to expand partnerships and volunteer involvement in order to address both academic and social-emotional needs among students. The selected schools represent a range of student needs; APS will assess the impact of the program mid-year and consider expanding it to other schools based on results.

“Reading is the foundation of lifelong learning,” said Dr. Francisco Durán, Superintendent of Arlington Public Schools. “With Readers Rise, we are connecting students with caring adults who can spark curiosity, encourage persistence, and show that reading is both powerful and fun.”

The initiative also aims to enhance community engagement by inviting volunteers from various backgrounds to serve as mentors and role models for young students. By the end of the school year, participants are expected not only to have increased their reading practice but also formed relationships that reinforce their identity as readers.

“Even one hour a week can make a lasting difference in a child’s life,” added Dr. Gerald Mann, Chief Academic Officer. “When students rise as readers, they rise as learners, leaders, and future innovators.”

The Readers Rise program will operate from mid-October until May. Community members interested in volunteering can find more information or sign up by completing the Readers Rise Mentor Interest Form.
