Students from Arlington Public Schools (APS) have been selected to participate in the All-District Band and Choir, representing their schools at recent regional events.

The All-District Chorus Event took place at Herndon High School from February 5 to 7. APS students joined the Virginia Choral Directors’ Association (VCDA) District 12 Choral Ensembles, with participants coming from Kenmore, Swanson, Williamsburg, Gunston, HB-Woodlawn, Hamm, Thomas Jefferson, and other local schools.

Selected middle school students participated in the Mixed Chorus category. High school students were chosen for both Treble and Mixed Chorus groups. The event featured guidance from experienced clinicians and conductors including Dr. Chantae Pittman of Campbell High School; Erik Jacobs of Willard Middle School; Reagan Paras of Berklee College of Music; and Dr. Francis Cathlina of University of Memphis.

For band students, the All-District Band Event was held at Oakton High School on the same dates. Participants were recognized by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (VBODA) District 12 Honors Bands. Students represented a range of schools such as Dorothy Hamm, Gunston, HB-Woodlawn, Jefferson, Kenmore, Swanson, Williamsburg, Wakefield, Washington-Liberty, and Yorktown.

Students worked with music educators Corey Graces from Themer Middle School; Dr. Kaitlin Bove from Diablo Valley College; and Dr. Gary Green from University of Miami.

High school musicians also performed in the Symphonic Band (2nd Senior Band) and Wind Ensemble (1st Senior Band). Some students are now eligible to audition for the All-Virginia Band & Orchestra later this month at James Madison University.

“Congratulations to the APS students who were selected to the All-District Band and Choir.”

These selections reflect ongoing student participation in district-level arts education programs throughout Arlington Public Schools.
