Richmond-based artist Sandy Williams IV has been chosen to create the next public art project for Alexandria’s Time & Place series, part of the city’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts will host a reception with Williams on Tuesday, October 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in the Overlook Room.
Williams’ installation will be displayed from May to November 2026 in the courtyard of the Alexandria Circuit Court at 520 King Street. The artist describes their work as “conversation pieces, like portals or bridges, to thoughts, feelings, or histories that are absent, intangible or might only exist invisibly within space.” At the upcoming reception, Williams will present examples of previous projects and discuss their approach to this new commission.
The project aims to encourage community reflection on the founding ideals of the United States and how those principles continue to evolve. More information about the Time & Place public art series can be found at alexandriava.gov/PublicArt.
