The Board of Supervisors approved two speed humps and new signage along Old Ryan Road in the Moorefield Station West community during its March 17 meeting. The decision is intended to improve safety by slowing traffic in an area where speeding has been a concern.
This action follows a request from the homeowners association after a pedestrian fatality occurred at the corner of Old Ryan Road and Hammersmith Place in 2023. Moorefield Station West is located near the Ashburn Station Metro facility, with Old Ryan Road serving as a main access route for commuters.
County data collected on several roads in the community showed that the 85th percentile speed on Old Ryan Road is at least 10 miles per hour above the posted limit of 25 miles per hour. This means that about 15 percent of nearly 2,000 daily motorists are traveling over 35 miles per hour.
A survey conducted among residents found that more than half of Moorefield Station West’s 528 households supported installing two speed humps and associated signage. The approved locations for these speed humps are between Bowens Wharf Place and Ocean Cliff Square, and between Hammersmith Place and Cambridgeport Square.
Funding for this project will come from the county’s Traffic Calming Contingency account. The Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure will develop a project timeline in the coming months.
