City of Alexandria announces closures and service changes for Thanksgiving holiday

Most City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28, in observance of Thanksgiving. The city has announced changes to service schedules for various departments and facilities during the holiday period.

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) offices will remain closed from Wednesday, November 26 through Friday, November 28.

The Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) will operate on a weekend schedule on Thursday, November 27. Lines 102, 103, and 104 will not run that day. Regular weekday service resumes on Friday, November 28. The King Street Trolley will continue its daily operation every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. DASH administrative offices will also be closed for the holiday.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is closed on Thanksgiving Day but will reopen from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns during the closure, residents can call 703.746.4444.

Courts including the General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and Clerk of Circuit Court will close at noon on Wednesday, November 26 and remain closed through Friday.

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices are scheduled to be closed from Thursday through Saturday over the holiday weekend. Residents are encouraged to use more than fifty DMV services available online at dmv.virginia.gov.

All emergency hotlines—including those for child protective services, domestic violence support, mental health crises or substance use issues, adult protective services, and sexual assault—will remain operational around the clock throughout the holiday period.

Health facilities such as the Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and Teen Wellness Center will close at noon on Wednesday and stay closed until Monday.

Historic Alexandria museums are all closed on Thanksgiving Day. On Friday following Thanksgiving some museums—including the Alexandria Archaeology Museum and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum—will open between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., while others remain closed.

The city’s impound lot is closed both Thursday and Friday; it is also typically shut during weekends and city holidays.

Libraries in Alexandria—including the Law Library—will close at noon on Wednesday before remaining shut for both Thursday and Friday.

Parking enforcement by the Alexandria Police Department at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts is suspended for both days of the holiday; however this does not apply to locations where parking is always prohibited or where temporary no-parking signs are posted.

Recreation centers managed by RPCA are all closed on Thanksgiving Day; select facilities such as Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility will open with limited hours (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) on Friday while others stay closed.

Trash collection—including recycling and yard waste—continues according to normal schedules during Thanksgiving week except for curbside food waste collection which shifts by one day after Thursday’s cancellation. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center operates as usual Saturday following Thanksgiving.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center closes for Thanksgiving but reopens with regular hours (10 a.m.–6 p.m.) on Friday; visitors can check torpedofactory.org/todays-hours for occasional early closures.
