All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Monday, February 16, in observance of George Washington Day. This closure affects a range of city services and facilities.
Alexandria City Public Schools will also be closed on February 16. The Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) will operate its bus service on a weekend schedule that day, with lines 102, 103, and 104 not running. Regular weekday service is set to resume on Tuesday, February 17. More information about DASH schedules can be found at dashbus.com/schedules.
The free King Street Trolley will continue to run every day from the King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square every 15 minutes between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Starting this month, the stop at N. Fairfax St & King St. (ID: 4000820) will move to 302 King St., across from Coldwell Banker Realty.
DASH administrative offices will be closed for the holiday.
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) will remain open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with adoptions beginning at noon on February 16. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, residents can call 703.746.4444.
Courts including the General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and Clerk of Circuit Court will all be closed for the holiday.
The Department of Motor Vehicles office in Alexandria will also close on February 16; however, more than fifty DMV services are available online around the clock at dmv.virginia.gov.
Emergency hotlines such as Child Protective Services (703.746.5800), Domestic Violence Hotline (703.746.4911), Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline (703.746.3401), Adult Protective Services hotline (703.746.5778 or 988), and Sexual Assault Hotline (703.683.7273) will continue operating without interruption throughout the holiday.
Health facilities including the Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and Teen Wellness Center clinics will not open on February 16.
Among historic sites operated by the city—known for enhancing community identity by interpreting local social and cultural history according to its official website—Gadsby’s Tavern Museum alone will be open from 11 a.m.–4 p.m., offering a specialty tour at 11 a.m.; tickets are available online while other Historic Alexandria museums remain closed that day.
The city’s impound lot is scheduled to close as well; it remains shut during weekends and city holidays but fees accrue over weekends except for holidays themselves.
All Alexandria libraries are set to close on George Washington Day.
Parking enforcement by police for metered spaces and residential permit districts is suspended only for legal parking spaces; restrictions in prohibited areas still apply and temporary no-parking signs remain enforced.
Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center are open from 9 a.m.–3 p.m., while all other recreation facilities and nature centers are closed that day.
Residential refuse collection—including recycling and yard waste—will occur one day later than usual during this week; curbside food waste collection keeps its regular schedule.
Torpedo Factory Art Center is open from 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; occasional early closures may occur as noted at torpedofactory.org/visit/todays-hours/.
