The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities announced on Apr. 21 the upcoming grand opening of a new ADA-compliant kayak launch at Four Mile Run Park, scheduled for Saturday, May 9 from noon to 3 p.m. The project aims to expand public access to local waterways and promote inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities.

The new launch is designed to improve access for all residents, including individuals with mobility challenges. It features a raised boardwalk ramp with ADA-compliant slopes, a gangway and floating dock, wheelchair transfer platform, and a roller entry and exit system. According to the city’s announcement, these additions are intended to make launching safer and easier for beginners and solo paddlers as well.

Developed by the Four Mile Run Conservancy—which has received the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award Gold Medal for its Water Access for All initiative—the site is located along the tidal portion of Four Mile Run near the Potomac River. The calm waters are suitable for learning how to paddle and connect users with wetlands and natural areas that were previously hard to reach.

Event organizers invite attendees to bring their own kayaks but note that space is limited; those interested should RSVP in advance if they plan on using personal watercraft during the celebration. The event will include remarks beginning at 12:30 p.m., music, an art project from Mobile Art Lab, and other activities.

Beyond recreation benefits, city officials highlight that this project supports community health initiatives as well as environmental education by providing free access to nature. It also opens up possibilities for future programming such as guided paddles or youth outdoor learning events.

Alexandria offers various services within its defined boundaries as an independent city according to its official website. The city operates under a council-manager form of government where elected council members select a manager responsible for operations according to its official website. Alexandria also incorporates racial and social equity into policy decisions in order to foster fair outcomes across the community according to its official website.

The city maintains several museums documenting local heritage—including African American history—and partners with agencies through commissions like the Alexandria Archaeological Commission in support of research and preservation efforts as noted on its official website.
