The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) will host a Black History Poetry Slam & Open Mic event to mark 100 years of Black History Month. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center located at 901 Wythe St.

The evening will feature live poetry performances by local artists and will be hosted by former City of Alexandria Poet Laureate KaNikki Jakarta. Attendees can enjoy light refreshments while listening to poetic works that celebrate Black history and culture.

“This milestone year invites us to celebrate Black history while uplifting the creativity and stories within our own community,” said Hashim T. Taylor, Director of RPCA. “RPCA is proud to be part of that ongoing celebration.”

Those interested in attending are encouraged to reserve their spot online. The city offers free interpretation and translation services for those who prefer communication in another language; requests can be made via email or phone. For reasonable disability accommodation, attendees are advised to contact Jackie Person or use Virginia Relay 711.
