The City of Alexandria is inviting community organizations, businesses, and event organizers to apply for the opportunity to host the Mobile Art Lab at their free public events. The Mobile Art Lab is a vehicle that offers hands-on visual and performing arts activities led by professional artists. It brings art materials and creative experiences directly to events within Alexandria’s city limits, aiming to engage participants of all ages.
Eligible events include those held in public spaces such as recreation centers, libraries, parks, schools, local businesses, neighborhood gatherings, special events, and pop-ups. However, political rallies, fundraisers, commercial marketing efforts, private parties or events organized by special-interest groups are not eligible. Organizers with questions about eligibility can contact arts@alexandriava.gov.
Applicants should note that the Mobile Art Lab has a limited schedule due to prior commitments. Event hosts must comply with city permit requirements—such as those for special events, parking, noise or health—and ensure their site can accommodate the vehicle’s size (22 feet by 8 feet by 9 feet) along with space for art activities.
Applications will be reviewed based on several factors including event date, expected audience size and demographics, location logistics and potential partnerships or sponsorships. To apply, organizers need to submit an online application by Monday, March 9th detailing their proposed engagement and providing information about the event location and target audience.
The Mobile Art Lab aims for 30-40 engagements per year including city-produced signature events like ALX Jazz Fest or City Birthday celebrations. Only free public events are considered; private functions or marketing-focused activations are excluded.
Key dates include:
– February 11: Application period opens
– February 23: Virtual information session
– March 9: Application deadline
– March 20: Notifications sent to selected applicants
Art programming offered through the Mobile Art Lab includes demonstrations or collaborative hands-on activities such as printmaking and collage-making. Activities typically last under five minutes per participant. Event requests must be scheduled for at least one hour but no more than three hours.
The lab only serves free public events within Alexandria’s boundaries. If an event is not selected initially due to availability constraints, applications may still be considered later in the year if openings arise.
For additional questions or disability accommodations related to participation in this program or communication needs in other languages—including interpretation and translation services—organizers can contact designated staff via email or phone numbers provided in the announcement.
Alexandria operates as an independent city serving residents within its defined boundaries according to its official website. The city maintains museums and historic sites that help interpret local social and cultural history as noted online, including institutions focused on African American heritage like the Alexandria Black History Museum. The council-manager form of government means operations are overseen by a manager selected by City Council per official information. Additionally, Alexandria integrates racial and social equity into its policy decisions to foster fair outcomes across the community.
