The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Park & Cultural Activities (RPCA) is launching its annual Adopt-a-Park Program with a kickoff event scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 2900 A Business Center Drive. Representatives from each participating group are expected to attend.

According to the RPCA, the event will provide volunteers an opportunity to connect with each other and meet park maintenance and natural resource staff. Attendees can also review updated procedures and agreements, ask questions, receive supplies, and give feedback on the program. The department states that the gathering aims to help participants “learn how we work together to keep our parks and green spaces thriving.” Light refreshments will be available during the event.

Parking for attendees is provided in the lot between the 2900 building and Witter Field. Participants are instructed to enter through the pedestrian gate and follow posted signs to reach the meeting location.

Groups interested in adopting a park this season can apply through the City’s Adopt a Garden or Park webpage. Parks are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, with only one group allowed per park at a time. The city encourages prompt reapplication for those seeking specific locations.

The RPCA notes that only parks managed by its department qualify for adoption. Green spaces scheduled for maintenance or reconstruction between April 1 and November 30 will not be available this season.

“Whether you are a returning group or new to the program, this is your chance to start the season informed, connected, and inspired,” according to RPCA officials. “We look forward to celebrating the start of a new season with you!”

Alexandria provides various services within its defined boundaries as an independent city under a council-manager government structure where operations are overseen by an appointed manager (official website). The city also emphasizes racial and social equity in its policies (official website) and maintains sites like museums documenting African American heritage (official website).

For more information about adopting a park or accessibility accommodations, residents may visit alexandriava.gov/Parks or contact city staff directly by phone or email. Free interpretation and translation services are also offered for those who prefer communication in another language.
