The City of Alexandria is preparing for a winter storm expected to affect the area from Saturday afternoon, January 24, through Monday, January 26. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch during this period, warning residents about possible heavy snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures.
City crews are working to brine major roads, especially in areas that are prone to icing such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. They are also pre-treating locations including schools, Metrorail stations, and recreation facilities. These efforts will continue as needed throughout the storm.
The City’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will operate around the clock starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday until 10 a.m. on Wednesday to provide shelter for those in need.
Alex311 remains available to handle requests related to the storm. Their hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays; online requests can be submitted at any time.
City staff will update residents with information about operating status and alerts through alexandriava.gov/Alert.
Residents are advised to monitor local media for weather updates and forecasts. The City recommends limiting travel during and after the storm when possible and planning ahead for essentials such as medications and food. Residents should be prepared to move vehicles off Snow Emergency Routes if restrictions go into effect and park off-street when possible so plows and emergency vehicles can pass safely.
The City encourages use of its SnowReport map to track plowing progress and service updates. Residents are reminded of their responsibility to clear sidewalks next to their property within required timeframes after snowfall ends and help clear curb ramps if possible. Clearing around storm drains and fire hydrants is also encouraged once it is safe.
Snowplows may leave piles of snow at driveway entrances; multiple rounds of shoveling may be necessary during significant storms.
For statewide road conditions, residents can call 511.
With temperatures forecasted to drop significantly, residents should know where they can go for warmth if needed—options include restaurants, shopping malls, community centers, or libraries.
Pet owners should ensure animals have access to warm shelter indoors along with adequate food and water. Homeowners are advised to insulate homes against the cold using caulking or weather stripping and prevent pipes from freezing by letting faucets drip slightly or keeping cabinet doors open near plumbing fixtures.
Further updates will be posted at alexandriava.gov/alert. Information about emergency warming centers is available on the City’s Seasonal and Emergency Warming and Cooling Options webpage. Details about snow removal operations can be found at alexandriava.gov/Snow.
