City of Alexandria seeks performers for Black History Poetry Slam & Open Mic

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) is inviting performers to participate in its Black History Poetry Slam & Open Mic event. The event will take place on Saturday, February 21 at the Charles Houston Recreation Center.

The RPCA is seeking performers who are 16 years or older. While acts from various cultural backgrounds are welcome, all submissions must focus on themes related to Black history. Performances should be between three and five minutes long. No live bands are allowed; however, a DJ, microphones, and a small sound system will be provided. Submissions can be in video, audio, or written format. Profane or obscene language is not permitted.

Hashim T. Taylor, Director of RPCA, said: “RPCA is committed to amplifying local artists and performers whose work reflects Black history and lived experience. Supporting these voices strengthens Alexandria’s cultural identity and keeps these stories rooted in our community.”

Interested participants must complete an online submission form and upload their performance sample by Wednesday, January 21.
