The City of Alexandria’s Office of Housing has released the draft recommendations and strategies for the Housing 2040 Plan. The public is invited to review and comment on the draft during an open house scheduled for February 28 at the Nannie J Lee Memorial Recreation Center, as well as through an online comment platform available from the week of February 23 until March 22. Feedback collected will help shape the final version of the Housing 2040 Plan, which is expected to be presented to City Council in June.
The open house event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include interactive stations and breakout sessions focused on different housing topics. Registration is encouraged for planning purposes.
Breakout sessions are scheduled as follows:
– Homeowner Resources and Common Interest Communities: 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.
– Housing Options and Resources for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities: 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
– Landlord Tenant Resources and Rights: 12:30 – 1:15 p.m.
– Affordable Housing Preservation: 1:30 – 2:15 p.m.
Interpretation services will be available in Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, Dari, and Pashto upon request during registration. Parking is available near the recreation center, and DASH bus route 34 provides direct service to the location.
The current update builds on Alexandria’s 2013 Housing Master Plan (HMP), which set principles, goals, and strategies addressing local housing needs through 2025. The city is now working with community members and partners to extend these efforts through 2040. Presentations from previous meetings—including community gatherings and panel discussions—are accessible on the project website at alexandriava.gov/HousingPlan.
According to information provided by the official website, Alexandria incorporates racial and social equity into its policies to support fair outcomes across the community. The city also operates under a council-manager government structure where City Council selects a manager responsible for operations. As an independent city, Alexandria delivers services within its defined boundaries to residents, businesses, and visitors.
