U.S. Representative Don Beyer, who serves Virginia’s 8th district, voiced criticism on August 14, 2025, regarding recent federal actions affecting Washington, D.C., in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).

In his first post at 18:16 UTC, Beyer stated, “This isn’t calculated to make Washingtonians safe, it’s at best a publicity stunt and at worst another strong-man action from a small-minded man intent on humiliating and intimidating people he regards as enemies because they live in ‘blue’ jurisdictions.”

Minutes later, at 18:20 UTC, Beyer added, “Actually reducing crime in our nation’s capital means working *with* local leaders and law enforcement to fight crime in strategic ways. Not stripping funding from federal crime prevention. Not making massive, arbitrary cuts to D.C.’s budget.”

At 18:21 UTC the same day, Beyer continued his critique: “Above all it means supporting policing initiatives that are respectful of the community and – most importantly – that actually work. Trump isn’t doing any of that. This is just another authoritarian spectacle. No one should be fooled.”

Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District in Congress since 2015 after succeeding Jim Moran. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and currently resides in Alexandria. He graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
