Rep. Don Beyer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, has addressed several economic and social issues through a series of tweets. Beyer, who succeeded Jim Moran and was born in Trieste in 1950, now resides in Alexandria. He graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a BA.

On April 15, 2025, Beyer criticized changes to the tax code that he believes would make it less equitable and more susceptible to exploitation by billionaires. He commented on the potential deficits, suggesting that “this will increase deficits” and Elon Musk indicated on TV that Social Security might be targeted to cover shortfalls.

On April 16, 2025, Beyer highlighted the economic impact of deep cuts to the federal workforce and grant programs championed by Elon Musk, stating they have cost thousands of Virginians their jobs and warned of further risks. He criticized governmental support for such policies, noting “This is a massive threat to Virginia’s economy… So disappointing to see Governor Youngkin cheer on policies” facilitated in part by Trump’s tariffs.

Later that day, Beyer discussed the Direct File program, which aimed to simplify tax filing. He voiced opposition to what he perceives as an effort by Donald Trump to dismantle this system, asserting it would prioritize wealthy interests over working Americans. He remarked that “Trump cares more about his wealthy friends than working Americans so he wants to kill the program”.
