U.S. Representative Don Beyer, who has represented Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, recently posted a series of messages on social media criticizing House Republican leadership over their handling of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding and voicing support for Americans demonstrating in favor of democracy.
On March 28, 2026, Beyer stated, “House Republican leadership chose instead to extend the DHS shutdown by advancing legislation that has no viable path to passage in the Senate. They brought forward legislation that prioritizes additional funding for ICE without any meaningful safeguards to address the disturbing”. In a follow-up post on the same day, he urged Speaker Johnson to act differently: “It is not too late to do the right thing. Speaker Johnson can still bring the Senate-passed bill to the floor, reopen the law-abiding entities of DHS, and ensure that public servants are paid. He should.”
Later that afternoon, Beyer commented on demonstrations occurring nationwide: “In Northern Virginia and across the country, Americans are exercising their constitutional rights to stand for democracy. No Kings!”
Beyer succeeded Jim Moran in Congress in 2015 and has served continuously since then. Born in Trieste in 1950 and now residing in Alexandria, he holds a BA from Williams College.
