Representative Don Beyer, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th District since 2015, recently addressed several national policy issues through a series of social media posts. Beyer, who succeeded Jim Moran and resides in Alexandria, used his platform to comment on legislative proposals and their potential impact on various groups.

On July 12, 2025, Beyer shared concerns about proposed legislation referred to as “Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.” Citing former Secretary Summers, he stated: “As Former Secretary Summers points out, Trump’s Big Ugly Bill will be a disaster for our economy. But the pain it will cause for Americans with disabilities, caretakers, medical professionals, the poor, and the elderly is incalculable.”

The following day, July 13, 2025, Beyer highlighted projected effects of the same bill on health insurance premiums under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). He posted: “Impacts of Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill: ‘The average [ACA] marketplace enrollee saved $705 in 2024 — a 44% reduction in premium costs — because of the enhanced tax credits… Without the credits, average out-of-pocket premiums in 2026 would rise by more than 75%.'”

Later on July 13, Beyer commented on immigration enforcement policies associated with Donald Trump. He wrote: “Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies are not about public safety, they’re political theater. Diverting critical law enforcement resources from tackling violent and organized crime makes us all less safe.”

Don Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
