Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, shared his views on recent legislative developments through a series of tweets. Beyer has been vocal about tax policies and amendments he proposed, highlighting his disagreements with Republican votes.
On May 14, 2025, Beyer expressed his discontent with the unanimous Republican opposition to his amendment aimed at blocking tax cuts for individuals earning over $100 million annually. He described this outcome as “crazy.” “Every single Republican just voted against my amendment to block tax cuts for people who make over $100 MILLION per year.”
Later that day, Beyer commented on a lengthy debate within the Ways and Means Committee regarding an amendment proposed by Rep. Jimmy Gomez. This amendment sought to eliminate tax cuts specifically for billionaires from a Republican bill focused on tax reductions for wealthy individuals. According to Beyer, every Republican opposed this measure despite its narrow focus on billionaires alone: “We spent the entire 13th hour of the @WaysMeansCmte markup of Republicans’ tax cuts for the rich debating @RepJimmyGomez’ amendment to remove tax cuts for billionaires from their bill.”
In another tweet posted later that morning, Beyer criticized Republicans’ decision against closing the carried interest loophole through one of his amendments. He suggested that this stance favored hedge fund managers and contradicted former President Trump’s promises to advocate for ordinary citizens: “Every Republican just voted against my amendment to close the carried interest loophole.”
Don Beyer’s career in Congress began in 2015 when he succeeded Jim Moran. Born in Trieste in 1950 and currently residing in Alexandria, Beyer is an alumnus of Williams College where he graduated with a BA in 1972.
