Don Beyer criticizes Trump-era tariffs and trade policies in April social media posts

U.S. Representative Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in Congress, criticized former President Donald Trump’s trade policies in a series of posts on April 2, 2026.

In his first post, Beyer stated: “We were told that this massive tax hike would somehow lower prices for Americans and foreigners would pay the costs. Like with most Trump promises, this did not happen. The tariffs forced Americans to pay more for everyday essentials as companies passed along the costs, from” (April 2, 2026).

He continued by addressing Trump’s claims about tariffs and their impact on American manufacturing: “President Trump promised his expansive tariff regime would revive American manufacturing and usher in a new economic ‘golden age’ for America. Instead, his reckless and chaotic trade war has delivered a self-inflicted economic disaster that is crushing American families and” (April 2, 2026).

In another statement posted the same day, Beyer argued that the administration’s trade agenda had not achieved its intended goals: “The President’s trade agenda has failed on its own terms. It failed to boost manufacturing, failed to reduce the trade deficit, and failed to deliver relief to working Americans. And yet, as Americans pay more for groceries, electricity, housing, and health care, my Republican” (April 2, 2026).

Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District since succeeding Jim Moran in Congress in 2015. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and resides in Alexandria. Beyer graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
