Rep. Don Beyer, U.S. Congressman representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, posted a series of tweets on August 1, 2025, criticizing former President Trump’s trade policies and recent Republican legislative actions.

In his first tweet at 17:37 UTC, Beyer wrote, “Those of us who opposed Trump’s trade wars warned from the beginning that they would raise prices for the American people, hurt relationships with our allies, and damage small businesses with self-inflicted chaos and uncertainty.”

He continued his criticism in a subsequent post at the same time: “None of the promised benefits are materializing, we are not seeing a ‘golden age’ and are losing manufacturing jobs. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is no strategy here, only a determination to bully other countries – no matter how much it harms America.”

Beyer concluded his thread by referencing legislative efforts from Democrats and accusing Republicans of exacerbating economic harm. At 17:37 UTC he stated: “Democrats have bills that would stop this madness, but not only are Republicans unwilling to break with Trump as he wrecks our economy, they just made the damage even worse by enacting the largest health care cut in history.”

Beyer’s comments come amid ongoing debates over U.S. trade policy and domestic economic measures. He has represented Virginia’s 8th District since succeeding Jim Moran in 2015. Born in Trieste in 1950 and currently residing in Alexandria, Beyer graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a BA.
