Rep. Don Beyer, a U.S. Congressman representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, has recently expressed his concerns regarding the economic policies of the Trump-Republican agenda through a series of tweets. Beyer, who succeeded Jim Moran in Congress and is an alumnus of Williams College, shared his views on social media on June 17, 2025.

In his first tweet, Beyer criticized the Trump-Republican agenda as “a massive transfer of wealth to the richest people in the country from everyone else,” highlighting that “the middle class [is] losing while billionaires rake in enormous gains.” He referred readers to an economic analysis by The Budget Lab for further information. “The Trump-Republican agenda is a massive transfer of wealth to the richest people in the country from everyone else, with the middle class losing while billionaires rake in enormous gains.” (June 17, 2025).

In a subsequent post, Beyer addressed the impact of tariffs introduced during Trump’s administration. He stated that these tariffs “crush working families with higher prices,” and noted that Republicans are set to increase costs related to health care, energy, and housing. Furthermore, he pointed out potential repercussions such as removing health care access for 16 million individuals and implementing significant cuts to nutrition assistance programs. “As Trump’s tariffs crush working families with higher prices, Republicans are poised to raise the costs of health care, energy, and housing…” (June 17, 2025).

Finally, Beyer described these policies as “stunningly immoral and irresponsible,” arguing they would inflict substantial harm on those least able to cope financially. He warned that such measures could exacerbate risks of recession and fiscal crisis. “These stunningly immoral and irresponsible policies inflict the most damage on those with the least ability to absorb it…” (June 17, 2025).

Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and currently resides in Alexandria.
