Rep. Don Beyer, representing Virginia’s 8th District since 2015, expressed his views on former President Trump’s trade policies through a series of tweets on April 9, 2025. Each message conveys his objections to the tariffs and trade strategies of the former president.

In a tweet posted on April 9, 2025, Rep. Beyer stated that “Every House Republican who votes for today’s rule is voting to preemptively surrender congressional authority and their own power to stop Trump’s tariffs from wrecking the economy.” He emphasized that supporting the rule equates to endorsing the retention of Trump’s tariffs.

On April 9, 2025, Beyer noted a partial reversal of tariffs by Trump, expressing that “It’s good that Trump caved on some tariffs on our trading partners, but his universal 10% tariffs, trade wars with China and Canada, auto and other sector tariffs still threaten our economy.” Beyer called for the removal of the remaining tariffs, highlighting the urgency of re-evaluating these economic strategies.

Additionally, during an April 9, 2025 hearing by the House Ways and Means Committee, Beyer described Trump’s trade policy as “idiotic” and labeled it as “stupid and bad.” He remarked on the policy’s impact, noting that Trump “suspended his latest tariffs just a few hours after they took effect.”
