Rep. Don Beyer, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, shared his views on refugee resettlement and related policies in a series of tweets on June 20, 2025. The tweets highlighted concerns about changes in the U.S.’s approach to handling refugees and humanitarian aid.
In a tweet posted on June 20, 2025, Beyer stated: “The U.S. has long stood as a global leader in refugee resettlement, providing shelter to those displaced by wars, famine, and political persecution. But just a few hours into his second term, Trump suspended the admission of refugees into our country. This is a moral failure.” This comment reflects his stance against the suspension of refugee admissions under former President Trump’s administration.
Further expressing his disapproval, Beyer noted on June 20, 2025: “Trump also made drastic funding cuts to critical aid – to organizations that help with resettlement in the U.S. and for humanitarian assistance abroad that can prevent conflicts and instability from escalating and creating new refugees.” His statement indicates concern over the potential impacts of these funding reductions.
Concluding his series of remarks on World Refugee Day, Beyer tweeted on June 20, 2025: “The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program has long been an exemplar of American humanitarian values of empathy, generosity, and respect for human dignity. On this World Refugee Day, I stand with refugees and call on all of us to recommit our moral and humanitarian leadership.” Through this message, he urged for renewed dedication towards maintaining America’s leadership role in humanitarian efforts.
Beyer’s comments come amidst ongoing debates about refugee policies in the United States during Donald Trump’s presidency.
