Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district, has been active on social media discussing international and religious matters. His tweets reflect his views on recent developments involving the Catholic Church and U.S.-U.K. trade relations.

On May 8, 2025, Rep. Beyer extended his “Congratulations to Pope Leo XIV, and to Catholics across America and around the world!” This message was shared following significant events within the Catholic community.

Later that day, Beyer expressed criticism towards a trade announcement by former President Trump concerning an agreement with the United Kingdom. He remarked on May 8, 2025, “For all the talk of a ‘full comprehensive agreement’ with the United Kingdom, the puny ‘deal’ Trump just announced leaves most of his U.K. tariffs in place.” He criticized these tariffs for being more damaging than those prior to Trump’s administration.

Continuing his critique on May 9, 2025, Beyer further commented on Trump’s trade deal framework with the UK as inadequate: “Trump’s ‘full and comprehensive’ deal with the United Kingdom is just a framework to negotiate a future deal that would leave his biggest U.K. tariffs in place.” He accused Trump of dishonesty and warned that these tariffs could harm economic conditions by increasing prices.

Don Beyer has served in Congress since replacing Jim Moran in 2015. Born in Trieste in 1950 and now residing in Alexandria, he graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
