Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, shared his thoughts on several pressing issues through a series of tweets on May 9, 2025.

In recognition of National Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Beyer emphasized the sacrifices made by military spouses and advocated for legislative support to assist them in overcoming employment challenges. He highlighted his proposed “Military Spouse Hiring Act” as a means to address these hurdles.

Beyer expressed concern over potential changes to Medicaid under a Republican proposal referred to as the “big, beautiful bill.” He warned that such modifications could lead to millions losing their healthcare coverage. As he stated on May 9, “No matter which way you look at it, proposed changes…will result in millions of Americans losing access to their health care coverage.”

Addressing workforce issues within the federal government, Beyer criticized Elon Musk’s approach towards civil servants. He asserted that Musk’s actions have disrupted the lives of those dedicated to public service and emphasized the importance of caring for public servants. On May 9, he tweeted: “By taking a chainsaw to the federal workforce…Taking care of public servants used to be something we all agreed was the right thing to do.”

Don Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and has lived in Alexandria while serving as a representative. He graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
